The HEART of Innovation: St. Francis Hospital

The heart.

Some may argue that it is the most important organ in the body.

Oftentimes, especially with increased age, this valuable pumping machine starts to deteriorate in function. Researchers at St. Francis Hospital and the Dematteis Center for Education and Research are trying to use their investigations to gain scientific knowledge and insight into this deterioration.

This knowledge  has been and will continue to be translated into improved methods for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of heart disease through the following ways:

  • Development of new noninvasive cardiac imaging methods capable of changing and enhancing cardiovascular care: cardiac MRI, cardiac and CT angiography, coronary calcium score, 3-D echocardiography and nuclear scanning including PET and PET/CT imaging.
  • Development of novel interventions for the treatment of heart disease including coronary artery disease and cardiac arrhythmias
  • Leadership and participation in multisite trials of promising new treatments for cardiovascular disease
  • Participation in studies evaluating innovative strategies for the treatment of carotid artery disease.

According to the American Heart Association, one in five Americans has some form of cardiovascular disease, our nation’s leading cause of death from illness. The St. Francis Hospital Cardiac Research Department is working to reduce these staggering statistics. Researchers are using the most advanced imaging technologies, such as cardiac MRI, 3-D echocardiography, cardiac PET/CT and 64-slice CT scanning, to explore the intricacies of the heart. cardiovascular disease, our nation’s leading cause of death from illness.

St. Francis Hospital is currently recruiting volunteers to participate in various research studies. If you are interested in participating or would like more information, please click here.
