Wind turbine in sky

Buoyant Wind Turbine (BAT) is a new innovation to generate energy in sky as it works at a thousand feet above the ground.

The energy-creating innovation has been in development for a couple of years by the Altaeros Energies Company in the US and testing of the latest incarnation is currently underway. If successful, the idea could prove to be an invaluable way of generating electricity in areas of dire need, such as locations affected natural disasters where power lines might have been destroyed.

The BAT is helium-filled and the design has been optimised so that it can work at around 1,000 feet above the ground. Inside, there’s a turbine that uses the power of the wind to generate enough juice for a dozen or so homes, with the current being supplied back down one of the securing cables that tether it to terra firma and prevent the blimp-style construction from drifting away.

Engineers have integrated both aerospace and wind turbine technology to create the BAT. An outer shell is the part of the design that provides the lift thanks to its high-performance helium-filled fabric layers. Located inside is the turbine, which is a three-bladed horizontal axis design that is both quiet and efficient. Meanwhile, those tethers that help to keep it firmly in place are connected to a portable ground station below that can be rapidly deployed from a shipping container.

The design is relatively low-maintenance and features autonomous controls
