Masimo’s Disposable Acoustic Respiration

European regulators have given Masimo CE mark approval for its RAS-45, a single-use acoustic respiration sensor intended for use with the company’s rainbow Acoustic Monitoring of respiration rate. The adhesive sensor, which comes with an integrated acoustic transducer and is designed to be stuck on the neck, can be used for patients weighing over 22 pounds.

Masimo is an American Irvine, California-based manufacturer of noninvasive patient monitoring technologies. The company is best known for its pulse oximetry and it sells more pulse oximeters to hospitals than any other company.

The new sensor is smaller than the previously available RAS-125c, making it a bit more convenient and comfortable for the patients, but Masimo claims it has the same performance characteristics of its larger sibling. The smaller sensor should be more appropriate for pediatric patients, as the technology is approved for use on those weighing as little as 10 kilos.

rainbow Acoustic Monitoring noninvasively and continuously measures respiration rate using an innovative adhesive sensor with an integrated acoustic transducer that is easily and comfortably applied to the patient’s neck.

Using acoustic signal processing that leverages Masimo’s patented Signal Extraction Technology® (SET®), the respiratory signal is separated and processed to display continuous respiration rate.
