The Pilot is the world’s first smart earpiece which can be used to translate between users who speak different languages. The brainchild of Waverly Labs, the device converges wearable technology and a translation machine to provide real-time translation.
The Pilot includes two earpieces that use Bluetooth to connect wirelessly. Two earpieces can be used to listen to music if the user chooses, and only one is needed per user for real-time translation. The accompanying app toggles between different languages and can upload these to the earpiece offline or overseas.
The Pilot uses specially designed noise-cancelling technology to filter out ambient noise and hone in a person’s words. Using speech recognition, machine translation, and speech synthesis, the translated language is sent to the listener with a delay of only a couple of seconds. You can have a conversation with multiple people if multiple users wear the earpiece.
At the moment, the device is set to translate only the conversation you have with specific people, but later versions may focus on translating what a user hears around them.
When the product is delivered in May 2017, English, Spanish, French, Italian, and Portuguese, will be offered. The company stated however, that it is working on additional languages, including Hindi, Hebrew, African, Slavic, and East Asian ones and will release them at a later date for a premium fee. However, early bird backers who buy the Pilot during its launch campaign will receive these additional packages free of charge.
The device is expected to be retailed between $249 and $299, but limited quantities are sold from $129 to $179 during the launch process.
