A new technology that uses three dimensional human tissues to build organs.
Organovo is an early-stage medical laboratory and research company which designs and develops three dimensional human tissue for medical research and therapeutic applications. The latest science invention from Organovo is a technology (novogen) which allows living tissue cells to be assembled into patterns and complex structures such as organs.
Organovo has partnered with Invetech., a company based in Australia to develop a bio-printer which prints and places human cells in a three-dimensional matrix to construct human tissue and grow blood vessels.
The company markets human tissues as a means of preclinical drug testing and discovery process, so that treatments to be done more quickly and at lower cost without any risks to living test subjects.
The living test tissues provide researchers the opportunity to test drugs before administering it to a living person which bridges the gap between preclinical testing and clinical trials.
Organovo is actively developing its technology with the intention of eventually being able to replicate entire human organs for transplant.
The company has long-term expectations that this technology could be suitable for surgical therapy and transplantation
In 2015, Organovo has signed an agreement to provide processes and technology to produce 3D printed human skin to L’Oreal for use in testing the safety and efficacy of cosmetic products.
