Pluto Ice Volcanoes

Pluto may have two ice volcanoes that spew water ice, nitrogen, ammonia, and methane onto the dwarf planet's surface, NASA announced today. The potential volcanoes were spied near Pluto's South Pole, in images taken by NASA's New Horizons spacecraft during its July flyby. NASA scientists used the photos to measure the mountains, they are several miles high and tens of miles wide, with large holes in their summits. "On Earth that generally means one thing a volcano," said Oliver White, New Horizo...

More than 11 moles on your arm could indicate higher risk of melanoma.

People who have more than 11 moles on their right arm could have a higher risk of skin cancer. Researchers at King’s College London have investigated a new method that could be used by GPs to quickly determine the number of moles on the entire body by counting the number found on a smaller ‘proxy’ body area, such as an arm. Naevus (mole) count is one of the most important markers of risk for skin cancer despite only 20 to 40 per cent of melanoma arising from pre-existing moles. The risk is thoug...

One night of poor sleep equals six months on a high-fat diet

New research finds that one night of sleep deprivation and six months on a high-fat diet could both impair insulin sensitivity to a similar degree, demonstrating the importance of a good night’s sleep on health. This study, conducted by Josiane Broussard, PhD, and colleagues from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, CA, used a canine model to examine whether sleep deprivation and a high-fat diet affect insulin sensitivity in similar ways. When the body becomes less sensitive to insulin (i...

New graphene based inks for high-speed manufacturing of printed electronics.

Developed by researchers at the University of Cambridge in collaboration with Cambridge-based Technology Company Novalia, the method allows graphene and other electrically conducting materials to be added to conventional water-based inks and printed using typical commercial equipment. This is the first time that graphene has been used for printing on a large-scale commercial printing press at high speed. A low-cost, high-speed method for printing graphene inks using a conventional roll-to-roll p...

3-D Printing Breaks the Glass Barrier

Researchers have cracked the challenge of printing glass through a nozzle. A team of MIT researchers have opened up a new frontier in 3-D printing which is the ability to print optically transparent glass objects. They demonstrated the first-ever machine that can print molten glass through a nozzle and make transparent glass objects layer by layer according to digital instructions. The 3-D printer G3DP produces optically transparent glass with the push of a button and contains a "kiln cart...

Corning brings Gorilla Glass photo print to India.

US-based Fortune 500 major Corning is launching a online service for the Indian market to get their treasured photographs printed on a high-resolution, scratch-resistant Gorilla glass panels, just like the touch screens on smartphones and tablets. The 160 year old firm, that created the glass casing for Thomas Edison's light bulbs, is a major supplier to Indian auto, pharmacy and telecom firms and has been exporting a part of its optic fibre cables made in India. Apart from entering the Indian c...

IBM announces carbon nanotube research breakthrough

IBM (NYSE:IBM) announced a research breakthrough that could soon permit replacing silicon transistors with carbon nanotubes in future high-performance electronic chips. Carbon nanotubes consist of single atomic sheets of carbon rolled up into a tube. The carbon nanotubes form the core of a transistor device whose superior electrical properties promise several generations of technology scaling beyond the physical limits of silicon. The IBM researchers developed a fabrication process that permi...
