Altered: The Innovative Faucet Solution that Uses 98% Less Water

The Altered Company has created a nozzle that uses 2% of your normal water usage. It’s flexible, designed to fit over any tap, customizable, with two modes depending on the needed amount of water, and an environmentally conscious solution to the everyday problem of water waste.

Water stress is a global issue that affects one billion people at present, and will impact an estimated 3 billion people in 2020. Furthermore, when one uses a regular tap, much of the water simply bounces off the surface of your hands or plates, or simply goes right past down into the drain. This product tackles this problem head-on, by saving water in an unconventional, innovative manner.

Normally, a solution for saving water would be to restrict its flow. This approach however is limited at a certain point, where you simply reach a drizzle. The members of the Altered team decided to try and utilize as much water as was coming from the tap as possible and decided to atomize the water, breaking it up into millions of droplets.

By creating a high speed, heavy mist, and shooting the water out of the tap, the surface area of the water increases dramatically, allowing contact with most of the water rather than only a fraction of it (as with conventional taps).

The result? 2% of water consumption. The mist produced by the nozzle, which can be easily placed on to any standard tap, would not be able to fill a glass of water very quickly. To combat this issue, the team created a switch to a regular Savings Mode. This mode saves 75% of water compared to a standard tap but gives the user an ability to fill pots, pans, and glasses much more quickly.
