Google Lunar XPRIZE (GLXP)- A $30 MILLION COMPETITION TO LAND A PRIVATELY FUNDED ROBOT ON THE MOON

The Google Lunar XPRIZE (GLXP) sometimes referred to as Moon 2.0  is an inducement prize space competition organized by the X Prize Foundation, and sponsored by Google. The challenge calls for privately-funded spaceflight teams to compete to successfully launch a robotic spacecraft that can land and travel across the surface of the Moon while sending back to Earth specified images and other data.

It was a monetary prize that spurred Charles Lindbergh to strap into the Spirit of St. Louis and become the first to cross the Atlantic in one shot. It was a monetary prize that encouraged Scaled Composites to build SpaceShipOne, ultimately spawning Virgin Galactic. And, next year, it will be a monetary prize that puts the first non-government-funded rover on the moon.
