Ask any perioperative nurse what eats the day and the answer is often the telephone. Before a colonoscopy, a knee replacement or a cataract operation, patients need to hear the same instructions again and again: what to eat, which medicines to pause, when to arrive. On November 5, 2026, Luma Health announced a product aimed squarely at that routine: Agent Launchpad, a place where health systems can run AI agents that carry a multistep task from start to finish.

Luma, which describes itself as an operational AI platform for healthcare, says the first agents prepare patients for procedures and check on them afterward. They call or text patients, follow each health system’s own protocol, and hand anything clinical to a nurse.

What Agent Launchpad does

According to Luma’s release, Agent Launchpad gives a health system one place to run agents that orchestrate work across several steps. Rather than a single reminder message, the agent holds a conversation. It might ask, “Do you have your prep supplies?” or “Have you had problems with anesthesia before?” Patients answer in their own words at any hour, and the agent tracks whether they are ready.

Luma frames the problem as one of time. Procedure prep takes significant effort from care teams, who reach out to walk patients through the same steps for each procedure and answer the same questions. Each patient can take several calls to reach. The company says Agent Launchpad takes on those routine conversations so staff can focus on the patients who need them most.

Seven journeys in the Fall 2026 release

The Fall 2026 release supports seven workflows:

  • Colonoscopy prep
  • Colonoscopy follow-up after the procedure
  • Knee replacement prep
  • Cataract surgery prep
  • Bariatric surgery prep
  • Endoscopy prep
  • Pain management guidance

In each, agents guide patients through preparation, track readiness, answer routine questions and escalate clinical concerns when needed. If a patient asks a clinical question, the agent passes it to the appropriate care team along with the full conversation, so staff can step in without starting over. That handoff is the safety valve in the design: the agent handles logistics, and people handle judgment.

Early numbers from two health systems

Luma says the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) and Mile Bluff Medical Center already use Agent Launchpad for colonoscopy prep. The company reports that so far they have seen:

  • A 95 percent average response rate among patients who receive outreach, with 70 percent responding within the first day
  • 50 percent of patients fully prepared with no staff phone calls at Mile Bluff
  • More than 20 minutes of coordination saved per patient for perioperative nurses, on average

These figures come from Luma’s own announcement and describe early use at two sites, so they are best read as encouraging first results rather than independent evaluation.

The customers’ own words add context. Paige Anderson, an assistant clinical service manager at UAMS, said nurses historically spent a large part of their day on the phone, and noted that many patients travel long distances, so arriving prepared matters. Tamara Coughlin, director of surgery at Mile Bluff, said the tool reduced the hours nurses spend making preparation calls and let patients ask questions whenever convenient.

What it means for health systems

The announcement is a useful example of where healthcare AI is moving: away from a general chatbot and toward narrow agents that own one operational job, follow local protocols and know when to stop. For hospital leaders, the appeal is easy to see. A procedure that is cancelled or delayed because a patient misunderstood the prep steps wastes a scheduled slot, and fewer manual calls free nurses for bedside work.

Buyers will still want to ask practical questions. How are protocols configured and updated? What triggers an escalation, and how fast does a nurse see it? How is patient data protected and logged? Luma’s release does not detail these points, so they belong on any evaluation checklist.

The company also previewed what comes next. This winter, it says, Luma’s AI will be able to read a procedure referral, reach out to schedule it, and enroll the patient in prep outreach right away. That would extend the agent from preparing a booked procedure to helping book it.

The bottom line

Agent Launchpad turns a familiar bottleneck, repetitive pre-procedure phone calls, into a task for software while keeping clinicians in the loop for anything clinical. The early response and time-saving figures are promising, and the real test will be how well the approach holds up across more procedures, more hospitals and independent measurement.
