Lucy: The Smart Mirror that Redirects Sunlight Into Your Home

Lucy is the first device of its kind: It can illuminate your home with real sunlight, by finding and redirecting natural light for you.

Most individuals spend over 90% of their lives inside, with limited exposure to natural light. Winters can lead to seasonal depression, and at large, last a long time, preventing us from receiving the Vitamin D and serotonin boosts associated with natural light.

Further still, from an aesthetic standpoint, interior designers suggest decorating tricks to brighten rooms when real sunlight is not a possibility. And some individuals would like to grow a garden but are unable to do so due to this lack of sunlight in homes.

The team behind Lucy aims to solve these problems.

Lucy can be set in a sunny spot inside or outside. A user can simply point in the direction and Lucy does the rest. It is created to remember where to send the sunlight and will keep it in the same place throughout the day even with the movement of the sun. The smart robot does not require any installation and there is no need to plug in as Lucy is solar powered.

From a more technical standpoint, Lucy consistently takes light intensity readings using her sensor array, or ‘pointer’. When a user points the pointer where he or she wants to redirect sunshine, the team-designed proprietary algorithm uses the light intensity values to position a motorized mirror at the correct angle allowing it illuminate a user’s chosen destination. As the sun moves throughout the day, Lucy makes micro adjustments to the mirror position in order to maintain the correct angle of reflection to allow natural light flowing to the same place all day.

Bright as 13 lightbulbs, with a 100 feet reach, Lucy is designed to provide light to a large space in your house. It is also weather-resistant.

As a whole, Lucy is a long term, low maintenance solution for bringing real sunlight into your home.
