Novel Regenerative Bandage Heals Diabetic Wounds Faster
Northwestern researchers have come up with a novel approach to treat foot ulcers. Their development, a regenerative bandage, heals diabetic wounds four times faster than standard bandages without additional side effects.
Experienced by 15% of people with diabetes, foot ulcers can lead to serious health complications. What seems like a harmless sore could result in, for 24% of those affected, a lower-leg amputation and in certain cases, even death.
These sores are particularly a problem for...

Drug prevents Type 1 diabetes in mice
A compound that blocks the synthesis of hyaluronan, a substance generally found in in all body tissue, protects mice from getting Type 1 diabetes.Nadine Nagy and Paul Bollyky and their colleagues found that a drug helped prevent the onset of Type 1 diabetes in mice. They hope to find out if the drug will work similarly in humans. Type 1 diabetes, formerly called juvenile diabetes, afflicts one in 300 people in the United States.

Coffee lowers risk of Parkinson’s, type 2 Diabetes, Five Cancers, and More
Harvard scientists have had coffee under the microscope for years, and last year announced the discovery of six new human genes that relate to coffee, reconfirming existence of two others previously identified. The long-running Harvard Nurses Health Study has found that coffee has protective qualities against type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease, and investigators are revisiting a 2001 study finding that it can also protect against Parkinson’s disease. Powell notes that this research at Ha...

Canberra schoolboy William Grame wins trip to NASA for diabetes test-strip invention
William Grame's invention to dispose of diabetics blood testing strips, has won the 11-year-old a trip to NASA. William's invention is a small, plastic disposal unit that fits into testing kits used by diabetics. Diabetics can feed strips into it throughout the day, and dispose them all when it gets full. William has 3D-printed a device that safely stores diabetes test strips. It is well established that diabetes wreaks havoc on people's blood sugar levels, but one thing we don't usually think a...

Contacts lenses that changes color when sugar levels change in the blood
Smart contact lens, created by a University of Western Ontario professor, help measure blood glucose levels for people with diabetes.
An ongoing innovative research of a new Smart Lens by Jin Shang, a professor of biochemical engineering at the University of Western Ontario is a contact lens that changes color when sugar levels change in the blood.
Diabetes is a huge and growing problem affecting one in every 19 people on the planet. It is a daily struggle for people with diabetes to keep ...
